between different members of the design team involved in the different stages of concept creation, embodiment and detail design, fabrication and production. It is frequently the case that misunderstandings arise, that incorrect and/or incomplete specifications are passed from one team group to another, and that errors or inconsistencies in the design are discovered at late stages of the process. Sometimes, design problems are resolved by production or technical staff in ways that are regarded as unsatisfactory by the originating design staff, but further re-corrections may be too late or too costly to attempt. A response to this problem has been to develop broader, more integrated teams, and the introduction of ‘concurrent’ design processes.

The complexity of designing a product as a whole can be reduced by taking fragments from existing designs and combining them, usually with some modifications. Each fragment concerns a particular part of the designed artefact or aspect of the design process. That is, as well as concrete parts and subsystems, it is also possible to transfer knowledge about those designed artefacts and the process...

cularly when defining product architecture. Several systematic methods guide the development of functional models and produce graphical representations such as function structures. However, functional modeling is rarely considered a quantitative activity. In this paper we introduce the concept of a quantitative functional model—a vector representation of a product in which the number of distinc...

stand design’ are two related but distinct processes. The activity of design necessitates making decisions, comparing alternative routes to take to decide on one, and thinking in abstract terms for conceptualizing; thus, it is synthetic. On the other hand, the activity of understanding design is similar to reading, necessitates deciphering the thought process of the designer, making abstraction...

A number of facts about quadratic algebraic problems and applied Newton–Raphson like methods are presented. The main results are about solution structure, loading trajectories, load flow feasibility boundaries and Newton–Raphson solutions. Various practically important applications of these properties are discussed. Although motivated by power flow problems, the results are valid for any proble...
